Wow! Just wanted to say congrats... I've been listening to Hypatia around 9pm most evenings since its release and it's a great album. Deserter's Songs is one of the first albums I ever bought that wasn't grunge, and I still listen to it on a regular basis... this is a real (and deserved) honor!

I don't know if it has the epic energy of the original Utica Flower Company album, but at the very least it's a fittingly laid back side-kick. With quavering roots of pure history! Laser vision! Popcorn babies! Delectable prunish skin! Ping pong slo-mo replays! Tortoise and lemur party! Fork in da road.

I've only really dissolved the first disc; and I'm absolutely crazy about John's 'Dizzy'. What a story!

(Of course I'm also nutty about dreams... but the magnitude of difference between the 'real world' and the 'dream world' is well depicted, I think. What is most satisfying is that the music perfectly matches the story, sproing-ing and boing-ing all around and finding a perfect little gnomish groove somewhere right in the middle of all the insanity.) Wowza.

Disc 2, here I come!

Jesus, could Becky or Redmond ever write a song that's not as catchy as it is heart wrenching? Is Zombie Girlfriend Hospital Attack Force the next Magnetic Fields? Why did Paul think that my mix of his song was better than the one on this comp??? Who the fuck is Will Weber, and why is his song so good? Why is a Scotsman and (probably) his son singing/screaming in French? Why is there so much quality lost between "Songs From Home" and DG9?? Will these questions ever be answered? Who shot J.R.????? Oh wait... That one's already answered... Anyway, I'm still only on the first disc! Amazing!!!

Tire. It's quite like the phenomenon that makes the word "colour" have that red squiggle underneath it on my monitor to let me know that I've misspelled something in American English. Fuck knows why there's a difference. Downloading now, and can't wait!

Um... another hour may be required. Tried reuploading it and it doesn't seem to be keen on uploads over 200MB. Splitting the discs into two... I mean, pumping up this... this... what the fuck does the rest of the world call a tyre? Not a wheel surely? The wheel is the total sum of parts... then again, we do call a kettle a kettle. I'm confused.

I kind of liked "We, The Undersigned." I like "Unsung" but there is already a site/blog called "Unsung" that is related to music. "The Oneiric" is cool, but most people won't understand what it means and won't bother to look it up. (My girlfriend has a blog called oneiromantics, and I have a blog called oneiro antics.) Out of the choices that seem mostly unreleated to the concept but still kind of psychedelic, I would choose "Moon Crumb." I can't bring myself to vote, yet.

I don't know if I mentioned this before, but I think DG9 holds a special significance for me.

My acoustic guitar is a Fender model DG9; it's a cheap-o discontinued model, but I'm very fond of it. And so I'll be interested to hear the resonances that form around this particular compilation.

Zzzzzzap!

Being fortunate enough to call Alan one of my very best friends, I've recently had the pleasure of spending some time in the studio with him. While the session produced no recording (broken tape machine), I can tell all who read this that the new stuff is beautiful.

Thanks for that, Smally.

Indeed! It's a grand record, James. 'Weekend Train' is far-and-away my favorite track. (Besides, of course, 'Tell Me', but I'd already heard that one on the last comp...)

I love how samplers give you an idea of where to begin with a record label, the amount of music available becomes less overwhelming and you get an idea of which artists are most suited to your personal tastes.

Listening to this sampler however, the amount of artists I still need to listen to properly remains exactly the same, just more urgently than I had to before.

And thanks for the kind write-up Smally (not to mention putting all of this together).

These records are fucking amazing. I can't believe it took me so many months to download and hear them. I think The Loaded Whispers is my favourite of the 3. The melodies... holy crap. It's too good Syd. Too good. There are songs on these that will stick with me for a lifetime.

Carousel Horse and Theme from 'Daishishi' is reminiscent of early Camper Van, when they were experimenting and having a blast. And I've been enjoying Do You Feel Uptight off DG8. That accompanying mando sound is tight.

General Oglethorpe and the Panhandlers - now there are some people destined for great musical things... I can't get over that's their first demo/recording. Bloody brilliant.

Inspired, encouraged, regenerated.

We're still familiarizing ourselves, hearing who's who. The bold, experimental sounds of The Falling Floors, gorgeousness going on over here with Foxes In Fiction. And Failed Sitcom?! Glad they made it in time. Syncopated, passionate storytelling of General Oglethorpe & the Panhandlers...

Smally, I've already copied and pasted your dank write-up onto multiple sites. Thank you!

that's spooky, I was just involuntarily whistling the Bethesda Ann track when you posted that...

My favourites on these things change day to day - yesterday it was a battle between Lenn9o9n and Bespeckled Egg, today I woke up and haven't been able to get General Oglethorpe out of my head... I've been listening to this thing for a week now, and I've had more favourites in that week than I've had good nights sleeps in the last 5 years

I've just taken my first listen through and there's so many great tracks on here. I'm honoured to be in such great company.

This feels like an amazing introduction to so much great music, it makes me wonder how I haven't heard some of these people before (Tuck Son springs to mind).

It's such a shame that's the last we'll hear from The Wheelies, but it's a lovely way to say goodbye.

We like it all. It kind of blends into the same album due to the nature of the package, it being an online download. Actually, that was what Andrea just said and I agree, however, 'Carpetbagger' seems to have more structure happening throughout. 'Karl Marx Lives In Lafayette Louisiana' in particular has definitive qualities. 'Trip Of Your Tongue' has a great vocal melody. The sound quality is great overall. 'Honey Pie' is killer! I don't know! Jon makes music I like.

definitely... I'm starting to enjoy it again. I think I really just needed a bit of away time from the front line & some reassurances that there is an actual collective behind the computer screen - plus I'm VERY excited about the cassettes development... something to show the grandkids

for now I'm beating my head against the brick wall of formatting in the Commune section, grrr

any joy on the multi-admin plug-in/set-up?

enjoy the new records... I think they're pretty phenomenal

I never thought I'd see the day The Wheelies would be getting played alongside Captain Beefheart... I started to think maybe someone was merrily pranking me when I saw that. Yep, their music is diverse but there are some real nuggets in there. Nuggets in a good way.

The Orange Drop album is fucking dangerous!

Big-ass psychedelic blues riffs with electronic John Cale-esque viola drones throughout.

Track 2 sounds pretty much like an early Velvets' outake. That's some dark pop music. Track three sounds like Arthur Lee playing through a load of messed up analogue hum.

Thanks Orange Drop and thanks Daydream Generation/Quixodelic Records!

I've only just been able to download the new DDG opus due to moving house and having my computer in a box.

Not only does it hit the standard, it flies by it the standard and flicks its V's at it as it sails by.

With an increase in quality with each compilation; at this rate 'Daydream Generation 28' will even piss on The White Album.

          Cheers Smally.

Glad you are enjoying Bobby - technically I don't suppose I "find" bands much anymore... there is a secret formula to begin with, but after that its more a case of us finding each other. Sounds cheesy, but it's true.

Keep the feedback coming in folks, it's much appreciated.

That figures... you put out a comp at 10pm GMT on a Sunday night and who is still up at 1am downloading & mucking around with it - the two Scotsmen.

Will get back to you manana about my no-show this weekend, it was a money thing. How ironic eh?

I dig this release. 'History' is a killer tune, tasty hook on that one, and I've been a fan of 'Inner Disco' for a while now.

Well Done's all around.

I'm sorry to report that no one lives in the Midwest anymore. There are literally three of us out here. Everyone else left for he coast, with the exception of Katrina refugees, who are still riding it out until tornado season. Although it would be nice to have some bread in these parts. When thinking about moving to the Midwest, you must ask yourself two questions: 1. Do you like drinking? 2. Are you prepared to be married? Single people don't survive out here. Anyone close to the age of thirty and unmarried is either divorced and damaged goods or gay.

And Kate Nash is the shit.

Hey, thanks Smally. I should mention that I wasn't a part of Travel Labyrinth. I threw that in in response to the part of the question that asked if any other band members had been involved in anything else. That whole thing was Rob and Luke and Paul as far as I know, so no credit is due to me for any of that, as much as I wish that I coulda been there...

"legions of undead trained gibbons"

goddamit I want some!

Compie 5 is actually getting a makeover behind the scenes - discs two and three were halfway through being levelled out when it went public. Should be an all-new shiney version by the start of the week if all goes acording to plan.

Plus a new Daydream Generation Records record.

p.s Becky - its ok, it isn't going anwhere.

Diggit, diggit, a thousand times diggit!

Yeah, the Cozy Home comp... Well, figure 62 bands and 4 hours versus 13 bands and like 45-50 minutes... That and the fact that I've got legions of undead trained gibbons doing data entry and burning CDs, silkscreening t-shirts, et cetera, so I've got a wee bit more free time. I can give you the name of the voodoo doctor that raised them if you like.

Peace and love to Smally from myself and all the other Cozy Homists and cheers to all!!!

COOL!!!

Looking forward to this blast of awesome new music. It's a sunny, warm summer day in Chicago. Perfect day for Daydream Generation 5.

Thanks Smallie for putting this together and investing so much of your time, energy (and no doubt money). Absolutely brilliant graphics too!

Blessings of the Buddha on all who walk this path, and on all who make this journey possible.

Well for a change I've been continuing to think about this and the more I think about it the more I think that free downloads are really the way forward irrespective of whether you're trying to break through as an artist or simply be heard. If the music is good enough then it's easy to remove it from wherever it is hosted once it reaches a level where it has gathered enough momentum. Let's face it, the likelihood of anyone unsigned without a lot of money behind them for promotional/distribution apparatus making enough money for it to be their sole occupation is highly unlikely. In fact, the chances are that even if you do sign to a record label that you're going to get screwed over sooner or later.

Agreed about the list of groundbreaking artists, but I think there's a very conscious descision getting made here about whether to sell yourself or give yourself away. I'm pretty sure that this is just the beginning of things... what's interesting me a lot at the moment is how to compete with the financially backed labels, the racing cars of the modern world, in terms of promotion & advertising. I'm tempted to conclude that organic, slow growth is the only way, there's something very uncredible & sickening about posting 20 MySpace bulletins a day about yourself. Ideas on a postcard.

Well for a change I’ve been continuing to think about this and the more I think about it the more I think that free downloads are really the way forward irrespective of whether you’re trying to break through as an artist or simply be heard. If the music is good enough then it’s easy to remove it from wherever it is hosted once it reaches a level where it has gathered enough momentum. Let’s face it, the likelihood of anyone unsigned without a lot of money behind them for promotional/distribution apparatus making enough money for it to be their sole occupation is highly unlikely. In fact, the chances are that even if you do sign to a record label that you’re going to get screwed over sooner or later.

Brilliant. I really respect those who feel called and compelled to create, then to find folks who might actually give a crap about said creation.

I'd rather give my music away to 100 people who are really excited about it, than to sell 25 CDs to people who really couldn't care less and will listen to it maybe once, maybe never. Maybe that's music snobbery, but so be it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as I recall, the truly groundbreaking artists never set out to change the industry, and didn't really know or care what to do with it when it happened -- they were just doing what came natural: i.e., Hank, Elvis, Cash, Dylan, Redding, Beatles, Velvets, Ramones, J&M Chain, Nirvana.

oh i dunno it sounds a bit scarey to me - happy to watch it from a safe distance (like someone ducking down behind a rock at a fireworks display with rockets that fell off the back of some Utican lorry).

New Figs tracks are slow to materialize, but they'll be around soon enough. Gonna polish up a new song for a single within the next couple of days, hopefully have it up by sometime next week. Until then, just trying to figure out this whole Cozy Home mess.

Well, it's a record. I listened to about twenty seconds of "Roll It Up" and decided to download and listen to the entire album before I spoiled any more of it. I don't know what I've got myself into, but cheers nonetheless.

although I don't consider myself a "leader" as such, more someone with very little time of his hands determined to do something interesting with it

"Laird" haha - one of my favourite socialist stories, this guy is poaching pheasants and the local Laird catches him and shouts "Hoy! You! Stop that at once!"

The poacher says "And who are you?"

Laird says "I'm the laird of this land, everything you see including the pheasant belongs to me"

The poacher says "And how did you come to be owning this land?"

Laird says "I inherited it from my father"

Poacher says "And how did he come to be owning this land?"

Laird says "He inherited it from his father, who inherited from his father, my great-grandfather"

Poacher says "And how did your great-grandfather come to be owning this land"

Laird puffs out his chest and says "He fought for it"

Poacher rolls up his sleeves and says "Well I'll fight you for it now"

Mayor of Utica - hahaha. That's Hunter S territory again I fear.

It's amazing what the synergy of Smally's involvement in the community has done. I think Smally needs an honorary title. I'm thinking "Laird of Fife". Smally can also have "Mayor of Utica" as far as my perception is concerned with it. Smally and Tim also are good leaders for the collective, they are always getting things to happen. I mean leader in a non-authoritarian buddhist anarchist sense I suppose, i.e. positive meanings only. We are all effectively supposed to excercise some leadership, but they actually do it well.

Is it the inevitable by-product of this being a Real Burnouts post that dialogue like this exists?
